ADVANCEMENT: requirements information now available in online videos

There are a lot of advancement changes this year, so wanted to make sure everyone saw them. One thing to note is that the BSA has brought back 4 MBs from the archives just for this year: Carpentry, Pathfinding, Signaling, and Tracking. There are special badges for these, but they do count just like other MBs.

The scout troop is a youth-run organization.  There are adult leaders, a Scoutmaster and Assistant Scoutmasters, to make sure the meetings and outings are run in a safe manner, but the program and created and driven by the members of the troop, in particular, the Patrol Leaders’ Council (PLC).

The leadership of the troop is elected by the members of the troop.  The whole troop votes on a Senior Patrol Leader (SPL), the senior most leadership position in the troop.  He is the one who runs the meetings and make sure that everyone is having a good scouting experience.  Our current SPL is Mike H.  Ideally, we would have an Assistant Senior Patrol Leader (ASPL), but the current troop size is such that an ASPL is not needed.

The troop is divided into smaller groups or patrols, where all the members act as a team.  They elect their own Patrol Leader, who is their representative to the Patrol Leaders’ Council.  We currently have three patrols, two of which are composed of experienced scouts, and one New Scout Patrol, comprised of newly crossed-over Webelos and other new scouts.  A Troop Guide works with the New Scout Patrol to gain experience in the scouting program and learn the basic skills for all the outdoor activities.

The scoutmaster corps consists of those adult leaders who oversee the troop program, helping the youth leadership accomplish their goals while ensuring safety and the following of Scouting's Ideals.  Heading this is the Scoutmaster Rich.  Assisting him are several assistants: Jon, Carl, Carl, Tim, Stephen, and Steve.  This group includes five Eagle Scouts and two Wood Badge recipients, along with many years of scouting experience.

The troop committee provides the logistical support for the various troop activities, including trips, Courts of Honor, fundraising, and advancement, and is entirely composed of the parents of the troop members.  The committee is headed by the Committee Chair Mike. and consists of a Finance Subcommittee headed by the Troop Treasurer Chet P, an Activities Subcommittee headed by (yet another) Mike, an Advancement Subcommittee headed by Valerie, and a Relations Subcommittee currently without a head.  All parents in the troop are encouraged to sign up for the committee in order to provide sufficient hands to accomplish the various tasks and allow the troop to run an excellent Scouting program for its members.
